The Numbers Behind Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the fastest growing disease worldwide, affecting two in 20 people. In the U.S. alone 30.3 million people are diagnosed with diabetes.
Diabetics not only suffer from the physical effects and complications caused by this disease, but they also have to deal with the heavy financial burned associated with the health care and medication necessary for this disease. In the United States, the polarizing health care reforms that come about with each presidency heavily affect the prices and insurance coverages for supplies.

The recent increase in insulin prices had brought diabetes awareness on the forefront as many patients had to resort to limiting their insulin doses and even buying insulin illegally on the Black Market.

This infographic illustrates the staggering numbers behind diabetes diagnoses and costs, that go beyond blood glucoses and carbohydrate counting.

Most Expensive Soccer Transfers of All Time

Football transfer fees seem to increase year after year, with clubs’ being willing to spend more than ever before on players in their pursuit for success and fame. This chart illustrates the top 10 most expensive transfers of all time.

Bar chart of the top 10 most expensive soccer transfers

In August 2017, Neymar’s €222 million move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain broke the world record for the most expensive single transfer. The left winger is found in the top 10 most expensive transfer list twice, for his € 88.2 million transfer to Barcelona in 2013.

In 2017 Kylian Mbappe made headlines when he became the world’s second most expensive player, when moving from Monaco to Paris St Germain for €135 million.

The €90 million Juventus paid Napoli for striker Gonzalo Higuain in 2016 puts him ninth place.

Barcelona’s attacking midfielder, Phillippe Continho moved to Barclona from Liverpool in 2016 for an initial €125 million.

Despite being one of the world’s best and most famous players, Christiano Ronaldo’s transfer fee of €104 million seems like a bargain compared to some of these other astronomical transfers. This is an indication of how transfer fees have increased since his move from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2009.

After emerging as one of the world’s best central midfielders, Paul Pogba transfered from Juventus to Manchester United in 2016 for €105 million.

Chicago Pride Parade Experiences Significant Increase in Participation

On June 27, 1970, Chicago hosted the first ever Pride Parade. Since then, the event has been held every year, and it has grown to be one of the most popular and well known Pride events in the world. The event represents the history of LGBTQ freedom in Chicago and the strong commitment to combating oppression.

From its modest beginnings in 1970, Pride, as well as the Chicago gay community grew substantially. Over time, the parade route was extended and it came to feature street performances, live music and intricate parade floats.

The following graph outlines Pride Parade attendance in Chicago from 1985 to 2014:

Graph of Pride Parade Attendance

In 1990 Pride attendance reached 100,000 participants, a 185 percent increase from 35,000 in 1985. From 1995 to 2000 the attendance increased by 250 percent, to 350,000 participants. Between the years 2005 and 2010 attendance numbers seemed to have stagnated at 450,000 people, however, from 2010 to 2011there is a significant increase of 66 percent participants in a very short amount of time. According to ABC News, civil unions were legalized in Illinois in 2011, thus explaining the noteworthy rise in participation.

In 2013 and 2014 the event attendance reached a high of 1 million, following the legalization of gay marriage in all 50 states.

Seven of Chicago’s Most Popular Haunted Locations

By Teodora Marinescu

Chicago is famously known for its sports teams, deep dish pizza, great hot dogs and fascinating architecture. However, the city is also home to an array of paranormal myths and legends that envelop it in a veil of mystery and darkness.

In 2012 USA Today ranked Chicago among the most haunted cities in the United States. While every city has its own paranormal folklore, the Windy City’s dark past, filled with catastrophic events such as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, the Eastland Disaster, murderous mob wars and the horrendous crimes of serial killer H.H. Holmes, sets it apart.

“Chicago is one of those cities that has experienced an extraordinary amount of tragedy, which leads people to believe that the city itself is cursed,” said Rick Hale, a paranormal author and psychical researcher based in Chicago.
“You have the World Fair which saw a lot of death, and of course you have the fire which basically destroyed the entire city. So I think that you have a mixture of things that has created the perfect storm, paranormally speaking.”, he said.

Top Ten Study Spots in Chicago

With midterms right around the corner, I thought it would be a good idea to compile a map with what I believe to be the best, most inviting places where you can get some work done, because sometimes, being at home just proves to be so distracting. In my opinion, the ideal place to study has a warm and quiet atmosphere, has comfortable seating, is aesthetically pleasing and provides motivational incentives, such as delicious treats, interesting books, or beautifully decorated rooms.

Chicago is full of hidden gems when it comes to interesting and relaxing places to post up and get some work done. In my extensive search for the perfect study spot I came across many interesting cafes, community centers and libraries. The map below shows ten of my favorite cafes and libraries around Chicago where I know I can always go and focus on my work.

I hope this map will help other students escape the boredom and unproductive atmosphere of the four walls of their bedroom and that maybe they will find even more exciting places to add to the list.

Google Trends: America’s Favorite Fast Food Restaurant, Nike and College Football

What is America’s Favorite Fast Food Restaurant?

Despite an influx of new fast food restaurants that promise flavor and healthy choices, McDonald’s still reigns as the most beloved fast food restaurant in the United States. According to an analysis of Google search on Google Trends, this past year, McDonald’s (blue) was the most searched fast foods in the United States, followed by Subway(red) and Panera (purple), with Chick-fil-A(yellow) and In-n-Out trailing far behind.

There are only three states where other restaurant searches were more popular than McDonald’s. Subway is most popular in New York and South Dakota where the searches for it slightly surpass those for McDonald’s. Panera outperforms McDonald’s only in Virginia.

From this graph one can conclude that the first place people search for when looking for a place to eat is McDonald’s. It is safe to say that Americans still love the old golden arches.

Nike Wins Over College Football

With college football season in full swing and the polarizing Nike controversy I thought it would be interesting to see which topic would concern people the most. According to an analysis of Google search on Google Trends, despite a small spike for the term “college football” (red) at the beginning of September, Nike (blue) tops the searches from September 3rd to the 14th.
The cause of this trend is most likely a result of the Colin Kaepernick ad campaign. On September, 4 Nike released and ad featuring the football player, which incited much debate and strong reactions.
Overall the difference seems to be only significant in that period of time following the release and searched for football rise towards the middle of the month.

Gov. Pat Quinn visited DePaul University’s Loop campus on Wednesday to discuss how pension reform is harming the Monetary Award Program (MAP) college scholarships and access to higher education in Illinois.

“This is so important to our state, not only in the past, but certainly now and in the future,” Quinn said.
“We want everyone to have the opportunity to go to college that has the ability to go to college.”

MAP grants are need-based college scholarships that allow merit students who are in need across the state and do not need to be repaid by the student. Quinn said that due to cutbacks and having to pay more money in the pension amount, almost 18,000 students lost their MAP grant scholarships this year.
